The Kamloops Blazers have named CSSHL coaches Steve Marr and Brayden Toma to their coaching staff ahead of the 2025/26 WHL season.

North Shore Warriors U15 Prep Head Coach Steve Marr and St. George’s School U18 Prep Head Coach Brayden Toma have both been named as an Assistant Coach with the Blazers.

Marr, who is originally from Kamloops, BC, played four seasons in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers recording 44 points and 330 penalty minutes in 242 games.

The defensemen would make the jump to the pro ranks in 2005/06, splitting the season between the AHL and ECHL with the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben-Knights and the Las Vegas Wranglers. He would spend the 2006/07 season in the AHL with the Knights before playing for the Rockford IceHogs and Pensacola Ice Pilots in 2007/08.聽Marr would head to Germany in 2008/09, playing for Herner EV 2007 in the German third tier for his final year of pro hockey.

Marr would begin coaching in the 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) during the 2017/18 season, spending three seasons as the West Van Academy (now the North Shore Warriors) U18 Prep head coach. Marr would go 9-25-2 his first season, but he laid a foundation that would lead West Van to a 40-26-6 record the following two seasons.

After a three year hiatus from the CSSHL, Marr returned to the North Shore Warriors in 2023/24, this time with their U15 Prep team. In two seasons with the Warriors U15 Prep team Marr would lead them to a 16-40-6 record while producing three 2025 WHL Draft picks.

During his tenure with the Warriors, Marr coached future NHLers Connor Bedard and Fraser Minten.

Toma, a Sherwood Park, AB product, boasts an impressive resume within the CSSHL having won three CSSHL Western Championships in five seasons.

He would join the league as an assistant coach with the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) in 2017/18, before taking over as head coach of the Elite 15s (U16 Prep) team in 2018/19. That season he would lead NAX to a 2019 CSSHL Western Championship. He would have his team sitting in first place heading into the 2020 CSSHL Western Championships before they were ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021/22 he would lead the NAX U15 Prep team to a 29-1-0 regular season record before falling short with a shootout loss in the semi-finals. Under his guidance, NAX would again finish the regular season in first place in 2022/23 before capturing their first ever CSSHL U15 Prep Western Championship with an overtime win. Toma and NAX would defend their title in 2023/24, as they beat first-place Edge School in overtime of the 2024 CSSHL Western Championships. In his three seasons with the NAX U15 Prep team, Toma would produce 38 WHL Draft picks.

Toma would head west to Vancouver, BC for the 2024/25 season as the Head Coach of the St. George’s School U18 Prep team. St. George’s would go 20-12-4 under his guidance, finishing in seventh place in the regular season before being eliminated by the eventual U18 Prep Champions, RHA Kelowna, in the playoffs.

In his six CSSHL seasons, Toma led his teams to a regular season record of 154-33-8.

Story submitted by Chris Blackman, St. George’s School

Naeem Bardai played for the St. George’s School Saints’ hockey teams from Grades 7-12. That was long before we joined the CSSHL. He was the captain of the Senior Varsity team in his final year at the school. More than two decades later he is still involved with hockey at St. George’s.

After graduating from Saints, Naeem鈥檚 junior hockey career involved multiple stops in both British Columbia and Alberta, spending the majority of it with the Beaverlodge Blades based just outside of Grand Prairie, AB.

Naeem then made his way to the United Kingdom, where for three seasons (2013-16), he played and captained the Oxford University Blues in the British University Ice Hockey Association. Over a total of 36 games he scored 86 goals and had 52 assists with only 16 minutes spent in the penalty box!

Outside of hockey, Naeem is a former professional cricket player. Naeem played professionally in England and Australia for a total of six seasons. A dual-citizen, Naeem has 10 caps, having represented Uganda in the ICC World Cricket League and World Cup Qualifiers, before retiring in 2017.

Naeem was our first Assistant Coach, working alongside current Vancouver Canucks Assistant Coach Jaroslav ‘Yogi’ Svejkovski when we joined the CSSHL eight seasons ago and he hasn鈥檛 missed a season since. He has coached at all levels within our program and his passion for the game is contagious.

Paul Pulver, who鈥檚 son Eli Pulver ’21 played in our program and is now at Minnesota State University, has coached alongside Naeem and offered this comment; 鈥淣aeem has been a stalwart coach in the Saints鈥 Hockey Program since its inception. He has strong technical knowledge and ability, but what makes him special is the way he builds an exceptional rapport with the players, and that enables them to grow and flourish in a highly positive environment. Naeem has no 鈥渂ad days鈥, even during his own return from an injury, and has always been extremely reliable despite balancing his coaching duties with a demanding legal career.鈥

Naeem Bardai 鈥10 is one of our many dedicated coaches who are all helping our student-athletes on their way to becoming fine young men.

Rhett Cotton (鈥25) started his Grade 8 year at St. George鈥檚 School in the fall of 2020. He was following in the footsteps of his older brother Blake Cotton (鈥22), who started his Grade 8 year in 2017 and who also played five years in the Saints鈥 CSSHL Hockey Program.

During his fifth and final season with St. George鈥檚, Rhett had no goals and two assists, but his contribution to the team and to the School was significantly more than 鈥渢wo assists鈥 in many ways.

Saints鈥 U18 Prep Head Coach Brayden Toma has this to say; 鈥淩hett is an outstanding young man that provides maturity and a professional work ethic every day. He is also fun to be around and has the utmost support from his teammates and coaches.鈥

Even with a full academic load in Grade 12 and the always busy schedule of a student-athlete, Rhett put himself forward as a Representative on Student Government and was voted into the role overseeing Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI)

Mr. Courtney Klassen, a longtime teached and the current Head of Grade 12 offered this; 鈥淩hett is an incredibly thoughtful, generous and dedicated student. Elected by his peers as the JEDI Prefect, Rhett has created an environment that nurtures student creativity and open conversation. Ever the 鈥淩enaissance man,鈥 Rhett is authentic, earnest and clearly lives the example of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in his everyday life.鈥

When asked about his experiences while at Saints Rhett commented; 鈥淭here are countless activities that you can explore in addition to a major sport like hockey. Everything from visual arts to robotics, to languages and so many other clubs. I loved being involved with ceramics and I don鈥檛 know if I鈥檇 get that opportunity in another School.鈥

He continued; 鈥淚 think I鈥檓 most proud of how much I’ve accomplished in my time at the school. I鈥檝e improved both on and off the ice, I鈥檝e met so many people, I鈥檝e grown as a person and I鈥檝e learned how to persevere when challenges arise. The complexity of being at Saints was a challenge and I think it鈥檚 great to be challenged. Saints provides so many ways for you to challenge yourself in whatever way you wish – academics, sports, the arts. I鈥檓 so thankful I was able to play hockey and attend St. George鈥檚 School鈥

For his final Term at Saints he’s busy with the JEDI portfolio聽and Rhett has joined the Track & Field Team for yet another round of challenges.
