Former Prairie Hockey Academy student-athlete Hunter Weber has graduated from the Edwards School of Business with a major in Accounting.

Four years ago, the Saskatoon, SK defenseman was forced with making a difficult decision between playing Junior A hockey with the Battleford North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) or pursuing a higher education.

Weber ultimately chose to attend the Edwards School of Business, a college within the University of Saskatchewan, while playing Junior B hockey with the Saskatoon Quakers.

That season he would find success both on and off the ice as the Quakers won the Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL) Championship while Weber was awarded with the Edwards School of Business Dean’s Honour Role List. That year he would also move to Rocanville, SK for an internship at Nutrien’s Rocanville Potash Mine in the procurement department, the largest operating potash mine in the world.

In 2022/23 the Quakers would come one win short of defending their title, losing game seven of the PJHL championship to the Pilot Butte Storm. But Weber would again be awarded with the Edwards School of Business Dean’s Honour Role List and moved to Calgary, AB for an internship at Gibson Energy in the operations management department, a midstream oil and gas company with operations in Alberta, Texas, and Saskatchewan.

The following year would be Weber鈥檚 last of junior hockey and he made it a good one as he won his second PJHL Championship in three seasons with the Quakers. Off the ice, Weber took an internship at Deloitte as a staff accountant, the largest accounting firm in the world. With Deloitte he performed audits of financial statements on clients in the banking, non-profit, and hotel industries.

While Weber no longer played hockey this season, he still managed multiple commitments, including a teaching assistant for two upper-year commerce classes and working on a pea protein research project with the family farm.

To top all of that off, he graduated thus month and recently accepted a full-time position at Nutrien’s corporate office in a Finance Rotational Program that had over 100 applicants and 4 rounds of interviews with Nutrien’s executive leadership team.

鈥淢oving away to the Prairie dorms at a young age (15) taught me invaluable independence skills that gave me the confidence to move away to Rocanville and Calgary for four-month internships where I gained valuable business experience leading to my end job at Nutrien,鈥 saidWeber.

Weber spent two seasons with Prairie including the 2018/19 season, the inaugural 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) season for the Caronport, SK based program. A 2018 third round SJHL Draft pick by the North Starts, Weber would tally 5 points in 20 games with Prairie that season.

While the majority of CSSHL student-athletes graduate to the Junior A or Major Junior ranks, Weber鈥檚 decision to put academics first is not an uncommon one. With the CSSHL striving 鈥渢o be National Leaders in Education-Based Hockey,鈥 Weber is one of the many student-athletes who learn valuable life lessons that help them further their education.

鈥淧rairie’s core values of developing life champions and leaders were essential to my growth and development as a person, and I do not believe I would be the person I am today without Prairie. Prairie has set me up for success in life, the workplace, and post-secondary education,鈥 remarked Weber.

鈥淚n the PJHL, balancing a 40-game regular season and 20-game playoff season schedule with five university classes was extremely difficult,鈥 added Weber. 鈥淚 attribute much of my success as a student-athlete to my time at Prairie. Prairie taught me the fundamental values of becoming a student-athlete, where I developed the skills to manage academics and hockey commitments. From doing homework on the bus to dedicated time in hotels, the skills I was taught during my two years at Prairie were essential to my success in managing a full-time university schedule with roughly 60 hockey games.鈥

Along with the life lessons, the academic preparation, and the on-ice development, Weber noted that some of his best friends are friends that he has from his time at Prairie over seven years ago, re-iterating the core values Prairie fosters.

RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna has captured the 2025 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) U17 Prep Division I Western Championships.

It was heartbreak for Prairie Hockey Academy (Caronport, SK) as they suffered defeat in the U17 Prep Division I Western Championship Final for the second season in a row as RHA Kelowna (Kelowna, BC) took home a 4-1 victory.

RHA Kelowna finished second in the regular season and second in Pool B during the round robin, earning them the wildcard spot in the semi-finals. They would win their semi-final game 7-0 over Calgary International Hockey Academy (Calgary, AB) to punch their ticket to the finals.

Prairie had a much different regular season experience, sneaking into the Championships in the 12th and final seed. Despite that, they would finish first in Pool A to claim the three seed and take on OHA Edmonton (Edmonton, AB) in the semi-finals. They would win that game in a shootout to head to their second straight final.

The opening period of the final would see RHA Kelowna ahead 1-0 as Rhett Tubello finished off a pretty passing play from Preston Kelly-Paquet and Ethan Fidelak. Neither team would score in the second as Asher Netherton (32/33) and Drake Mooney (46/49) turned aside a combined 26 shots.

Jack Brown doubled the RHA Kelowna lead 2:52 into the third and Hudson Podollan gave them some breathing room less than two minutes later as RHA Kelowna was in full control up 3-0. A highlight-reel individual effort from Seamus Dillon would give Prairie some life, and their first goal of the game midway through the third.

Prairie would continue to push late but Logan Lanti sent an end-to-end shot over the heads of the Prairie skaters and into the empty net to secure the win with 1:40 remaining.

The CSSHL Featured Games of the Day for February 14 & 16, 2025 will feature a U18 Prep matchup and a U15 Prep game.

You can catch all of the action live on FloHockey.

Friday, February 14, 2025 – 10:00am MST: GFL Twin Arena

Prairie Hockey Academy (24-4-0) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (23-2-3) U18 Prep

The first place Northern Alberta Xtreme (Devon, AB) and eighth place Prairie Hockey Academy (Caronport, SK) have met just once this season, on February 9th. Prairie would take that game on home ice with a 3-2 overtime win, as Hubert Larose scored just seven seconds into the extra frame. Prairie and NAX sit first and second in goals against, and goal differential, and third and second in goals for.

Prairie is led by a goaltending duo that has given up just 56 goals in 28 games this season. Micah Davidson (14-1-0) and Cameron Beisal (16-2-1) ranked first and third with a 1.80 and 2.18 GAA. Davidson leads the CSSHL U18 Prep division with a .938 SV% and 4 shutouts, while his 14 wins place him second. Offensively, Henry Thunderblanket (13-39-52) sits one point off the league lead with 52 points in 28 games. Rylan Emigh (11-34-45) and Larose (20-24-44) find themselves inside the Top 15 and on the plus side of 40. Seven Prairie skaters have at least 20 points while all skaters (minimum 15 games played) find themselves with double digits. Captain Ryland Molde (6-28-34) leads the Prairie defensive core with 6 goals, 28 assists and 34 points.

With 69 goals against in 28 games, Nate Stevens (11-1-1) and Tyler Swanson (12-1-2) find themselves fourth and ninth in goals against average, with Stevens sitting sixth with a .924 SV% and tied for third with Beisal with three shutouts. 2007 born forward Ben Deacon paces the NAX offence with 33 assists and 46 points in 27 games. NAX has relied heavily on their depth this season, with 13 skaters having 20 or more points and all but one player having double digit points. That singular NAX skater is defensive defenseman Reid Soper (1-4-5), who is a 2024 WHL Draft second round pick who has made his WHL debut with the Lethbridge Hurricanes this season. Darius Hordal (7-25-32) leads the NAX defensive core with 32 points, good enough for sixth among all U18 Prep defensemen. With 14 goals, Saskatoon Blades prospect Liam Eisnor (14-11-25) leads all U18 Prep defensemen.

Sunday, February 16, 2025 – 10:45am PST: Planet Ice Delta – Canadian

Yale Hockey Academy (20-8-2) vs Delta Hockey Academy (20-9-0) U15 Prep

This will be the third and final game between the two sides with the series currently tied 1-1. The visiting side has won both games with third ranked Delta Hockey Academy (Delta, BC) taking the first matchup on November 8 by a score of 7-3, and eighth Yale Hockey Academy (Abbotsford, BC) taking the rematch 3-2 in November 30.

Yale is led offensively by a 2011 born first-year player in Parker McMillan (23-26-49). The Semiahmoo, BC forward leads the team with 23 goals and 49 points in 29 games this season. Defenseman Christopher Kokkoris (3-32-35) leads Yale with 32 assists while sitting third with 35 points. His 35 points are 22 more than any other Yale defender this season. Michael Kuzik (15-23-38) sits second in team scoring while Tony Cabelka (16-18-34) and Tanner Massey (18-14-32) each have 30-plus points this season. In net, Mason Sutherland (9-4-1) and Gavin Craig (10-4-1) have each played in 16 games this season, combining for a 3.04 GAA, .905 SV% and 3 shutouts.

With 70 goals against in 29 games Delta has given up the third fewest goals against this season. Jack Utsunomiya (9-4-0) sits second with a 2.14 GAA and sixth with a .920 SV%. Along with Quinn Coupland (11-5-0), the duo has a combined 4 shutouts, 2.35 GAA and .911 SV%. Forward Peter Banicevic (23-35-58) sits fifth in league scoring with 58 points. His 35 assists are 10 more than next closest on his team, while his 58 points are 14 ahead of Tripp Fischer (23-21-44). Ryker Doka (12-17-29) leads all Delta defensemen with 12 goals, and is tied with Charlie Leonard (4-25-29), leads the d-core and sits second on the team with 25 assists, with 29 points. Eli Vickers (6-21-27) sits right behind the duo with 27 points, giving Delta three offensive producing defensemen.

The 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) is excited to announce the four winners of the Student-Athlete of the Month Award for January: Noah Brewer, Hayden Wild, Asher Watson, Ben Meyer.聽

For the 2024/25 season the CSSHL is proud to introduce the Student-Athlete of the Month Award for the four different CSSHL divisions/age brackets: Eastern, West Female, West U18 Male (U18 Prep, U17 Prep, U17) and West U15 Male (U15 Prep and U15) .

This award is aimed at recognizing the student-athletes within the CSSHL and acknowledges their hard work, dedication, commitment, leadership, academics and community impact.

We would like to congratulate these four student-athletes, who were all nominated by their programs, for their hard work in the month of January.

East Division – Noah Brewer, Ontario Hockey Academy

“Noah is a student-athlete with great determination both on and off the ice. In his academics, he shows maturity and hard work, attaining some of the highest marks in the school. Though a quiet member of the community, he consistently acts as a role model for others to follow.”

West Female Division – Hayden Wild, Okanagan Hockey Academy

“Hayden has shown outstanding leadership and commitment to her community both on and off the ice. Since September, she has been volunteering as a junior coach with the Penticton Minor Hockey Association (PMHA) U9 team, dedicating her time to helping young players develop their skills and passion for the game. She attends their weekly sessions whenever her schedule allows, serving as a mentor and positive role model for the young athletes.

Beyond coaching, Hayden has also taken extra steps to build a strong hockey community. She also arranges for her U18 Female Prep Black teammates to cheer on the U9 team during games, creating an unforgettable experience for the young players and demonstrating her dedication to supporting others in the sport.

Her leadership, sportsmanship, and commitment to giving back make her a worthy nominee for this recognition.”

West Male U18 Division – Asher Watson, Prairie Hockey Academy

“Asher is a 4th year Briercrest Christian Academy/PHA student-athlete.

While playing on the U18 Prep team, Asher is maintaining a High Honours academic average. If that isn鈥檛 enough, Asher works a part time job refereeing minor hockey, volunteers in the local minor hockey league practicing with the youth in our community to share his love for hockey and leads school activities on our Student Leadership Team. The best part has been watching Asher grow in his confidence while leading his peers. He easily commands the audience while in charge of any school wide activities. Academics, Volunteerism, Leadership, Athleticism, Asher is doing it all with a humble gracious attitude.”

West Male U15 Division – Ben Meyer, Notre Dame

“Ben is leading all of our Grade 9鈥檚 average in school. Ben is an outstanding student-athlete for our school. Ben takes care of his academics first, which has led him to a prestigious Award of Distinction here at Notre Dame. Attending a private boarding school is a challenge for any 15-year-old kid, but Ben has been committed to developing all aspects of his life. Ben always completes his studies in his free time which has allowed him to focus and succeed on the ice, and in the classroom. Here at Notre Dame, we believe a healthy mind leads to a healthy body and Ben has fully engraved himself into this lifestyle. Ben is very committed to being the best version of himself both in the classroom, in his personal life, and on the ice. We look forward to watching Ben grow in his career as he is an example of the student athlete our school culture here at Notre Dame looks to grow. Congratulations Ben this is very well deserved.”

Boasting a roster with 11 WHL prospects, SAHA has scored 103 goals in 21 games, third most in the U18 Prep division. OHA Edmonton finds themselves inside the top five for offensive output with 95 goals scored this season. Forwards Calum Giese (15-12-27), Red Deer Rebels prospect Nolan Schmidt (10-16-26) and Parker Fitzgerald (11-14-25) all sit on the plus side of 20 points this season. Swift Current Broncos prospect Jayden Oleskiw (8-10-18) and Alexandre Jacques (5-13-18) sit second and third in team scoring.
