Former CSSHL student-athletes Mathieu Lajoie and Ben Macbeath have signed WHL Scholarship and Development Agreements.

Selected in the ninth round, 179th overall by the Victoria Royals at the 2023 WHL Draft, Lajoie joined the Northern Alberta Xtreme for the 2023/24 U17 Prep season. In 30 games the St. Albert, AB forward posted a team high 30 assists and 46 points. This season he would play 40 AJHL games with the Bonnyville Pontiacs, tallying 5 goals and 18 assists for 23 points.

Lajoie has signed in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Macbeath joined the CSSHL in 2021/22 and played two seasons with the Yale Hockey Academy U15 Prep team. In 57 games the defensemen would tally 11 goals and 55 assists, finishing fourth among defensemen in 2022/23 with 43 points. At the conclusion of the season the Kelowna Rockets would select Macbeath in the seventh round, 136th overall at the 2023 WHL Draft.

Macbeath would return home to Calgary, AB in 2023/24 and play for the Edge School U18 Prep team. In the regular season he would record 6 goals and 23 assists in 26 games. He would add six points in five playoff games as Edge captured their second straight CSSHL U18 Prep Western Championship.

Although originally drafted by the Rockets, Macbeath has signed with his hometown Calgary Hitmen.

48 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) alumni competed at the Centennial Cup in Calgary, AB.

12 of those 48 CSSHL alumni would help the Calgary Canucks be crowned Centennial Cup Champions as they defeated the Melfort Mustangs and their 7 CSSHL alumni 7-2 in the finals.

The Centennial Cup see’s the nine Canadian Junior A Champions and one host team compete for a Canadian National Championship. The 10 teams are split into two pools of five:

The 48 CSSHL alumni represented 9 of the 10 teams competing in this years National Junior A Championship. The hosts and back-to-back AJHL Champion Canucks led the way with 12 CSSHL alumni. The Grande Prairie Storm, who lost in the AJHL Final to the Canucks, sit second with nine CSSHL alumni.

Former South Alberta Hockey Academy (SAHA) student-athlete Carter Cunningham has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

A forward from Lethbridge, AB Cunningham had a team high 20 assists during the 2023/24 CSSHL U18 Prep season. His 16 goals and 36 points in 30 games were both second among SAHA U18 Prep skaters.

Cunningham started the season in the AJHL with the Calgary Canucks, tallying 4 goals and 11 assists in 13 games. Undrafted to the WHL, he would make his debut on October 25 against the Red Deer Rebels and has played in 2 games this season with a +1 plus/minus rating.

The Tri-City Americans have signed former CSSHL student-athlete Gavin Garland to a Western Hockey League (WHL) Scholarship and Development Agreement.

Garland originally joined Edge School ahead of the 2019/20 season tallying 31 points in 25 U15 Prep games.

A forward from Calgary, AB, Garland then joined Delta for two seasons at the U15 Prep and U17 Prep levels. In 24 games he would record 44 points before adding 13 in 5 playoff games as Delta captured the 2022 CSSHL U17 Prep Western Championship.

Garland then joined Calgary International Hockey Academy (CIHA) for the 2022/23 U18 Prep season finishing first on his team and third in the league with 58 points in 32 games.

Originally selected in the second round, 31st overall by the Tri-City Americans at the 2021 WHL Draft, he would join the Calgary Canucks in the AJHL this season, finishing with 43 points in 52 games. He would add 18 more points in 15 playoff games as the Canucks were crowned as AJHL Champions.

Former OHA Edmonton coach Derrick Martin has been named an Assistant Coach in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Kelowna Rockets.

Martin spent the 2023/24 season as GM and Head Coach of the Camrose Kodiaks leading them to a 22-28-7 record in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

Prior to his time in the AJHL Martin spent two years in the 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) with OHA Edmonton. During the 2022/23 U15 Prep season he led his team to a 14-13-0 record and playoff berth at the 2023 CSSHL Western Championships. He would also serve as the Team Alberta Video Coach at the Canada Winter Games.

During the 2021/22 U16 Prep season OHA Edmonton would finish in fifth placing going 19-16-1 under Martin’s command.

Former CSSHL student-athletes Emmitt Finnie and Connor Ungar have signed NHL Entry Level Contracts.

Finnie spent three seasons in the CSSHL with Yale Hockey Academy. The Lethbridge, AB forward joined the program in 2018/19, playing for their U15, U15 Prep and U18 Prep team. In 65 total games he would record 51 goals and 56 assists. After being selected in the fourth round, 82nd overall at the 2020 WHL Draft by the Kamloops Blazers, Finnie would join the club in 2021/22, tallying 6 points in 48 games.

Last season he would finish with 35 points in 64 games which lead the Detroit Red Wings to select him in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Draft. This season Finnie finished with 59 points in 62 WHL games with the Blazers.

A goaltender from Calgary, AB, Ungar joined the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) U16 Prep team in 2017/18, winning a CSSHL Western Championship that year. He would start the following season with the NAX U18 Prep team before splitting the second half of the year between the AJHL with the Okotoks Oilers, and the WHL with the Brandon Wheat Kings. Undrafted to the WHL, Ungar would bounce around between the Wheat Kings and the AJHL’s Whitecourt Wolverines for the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons.

Ungar would spend the entirety of the 2021/22 season in the WHL with the Red Deer Rebels before joining the Moose Jaw Warriors for the 2022/23 WHL season. He would finish his WHL career with a 2.57GAA, .917SV%, 3 shutouts and a 53-20-2 record in 87 total games.

This season Ungar joined Brock University where he was named a USports (OUA West) All-Rookie Team, First Team All-Star, Goaltender of the Year and Rookie of the Year after posting a 2.15GAA and .932SV% in 26 games. Ungar was undrafted to the NHL but has signed with the Edmonton Oilers.

10 former CSSHL student-athletes helped Canada West win gold yesterday at the 2023 World Junior A Challenge.

The tournament, which took place from December 10-17, saw some of the best junior A players from Canada, the US, Sweden and Slovakia gather in Truro, NS.

Canada East (3-1-0) would finish the round robin in second, while Canada West (1-3-0) finished fourth, with both teams advancing to the semi-finals. Canada East would defeat Sweden 7-5 while Canada West beat the US 4-3 in overtime to set up an all Canada final.

With Canada East having won the round robin matchup between the two clubs 5-2, Canada West would flip the script with a 7-2 victory to capture gold.

Jack Silverberg (Okotoks Oilers/OHA Edmonton) captained the team and netminder Erick Roest (Sherwood Park Crusaders/Northern Alberta Xtreme) was named a Tournament All-Star.

The Canada West roster included the following CSSHL alumni, all 10 of which play in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL):

Former Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) forward Kai Matthew has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Kamloops Blazers after spending the last three seasons in the AJHL.

Matthew joined NAX for the 2019/20 U15 Prep season. In 25 games he would record 38 points, third amongst his team. At the conclusion of the season the Blazers selected Matthew in the fifth round, 107th overall at the 2020 WHL Draft.

The Edmonton, AB forward returned to NAX for the 2020/21 U18 Prep season, tallying one goal and five assists in six games.

Matthew joined the AJHL and Blackfalds Bulldogs in 2022/21, recording 8 points in 33 games. He has spent the last two seasons with the Drumheller Dragons, producing 16 goals, 25 assists and 41 points in 68 games.

Four CSSHL student-athletes have signed with the Calgary Canucks for the 2023/24 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) season.

Luke Davies spent the last three seasons with the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX). In four U15 Prep games in 2020/21 he would tally two points. The following U16 Prep season he would finish with 24 goals and 14 assists in 31 games. He would add four points in five playoff games as NAX captured the 2022 CSSHL U16 Prep Western Championship. This season the Calgary, AB forward finished with 20 points in 31 U18 Prep games.

A forward from Calgary, AB, Gavin Garland played four seasons in the CSSHL. He joined Edge School in 2019/20, recording 31 points in 25 U15 Prep games. He would join Delta Hockey Academy Green for the 2020/21 U15 Prep season, tallying nine points in four games. In 2021/22 Garland would record 35 points in 20 regular season games and 13 points in 5 playoff games as Delta captured the 2022 CSSHL U17 Prep Western Championship. This past season Garland would play for International Hockey Academy (IHA), finishing third among all U18 Prep skaters with 58 points in 32 games.

Jett Koch spent the last three CSSHL seasons with Edge School. In 2020/21 he would finish with six points in five U16 Prep games. The following U17 Prep season the Calgary, AB forward would finish fifth in team scoring with 52 points in 32 games while being named to the CSSHL U17 Prep All-Academic Team. This season Koch would record 17 points in 33 U18 Prep games. He would add one point in five playoff games as Edge captured the 2023 CSSHL U18 Prep Western Championship.

Kasey Russell joined Prairie Hockey Academy for the 2022/23 U18 Prep season. In 30 games the Cardston, AB forward would finish second in team scoring with 36 points in 30 games.
